Microsoft Sure Has A Sense Of Humor…

So we just upgraded to Microsoft Office 2010 and I’m not sure if any of you have ever sorted your outlook inbox by size but I got a kick out of this at work today… got to love Microsoft’s sense of humor.

Mud Raiders – Logo Design

As a participant in the 2010 LA Mud Run I designed a t-shirt logo for team Mud Raiders:

The design was based off the .eps Oakland Raider’s file from Brands of the World. I kept the shield as a template and removed the rest of the details using the Direct Select Tool. From here I inserted my own text and used the Pen Tool and Pencil Tool to create a vector path version of the image below:

I wanted to keep the image as simple as possible so I added only essential details. The Pen Tool initially left me with a vector image with very sharp, rough edges, so I created a more naturalistic image using the Smooth Tool.

Fashion IS Art – Banner Ad

Last month I was contacted to create an online banner ad for the Fashion IS Art art walk in Los Angeles, CA.

Resource Materials:

Subject: I overlaid the original image on top of a contrasting background and cropped the subject out with the polygonal lasso tool.

Background: The graffiti on the wall was distracting so I removed it and re-created the tiles using a combination of the patch, clone stamp, burn and dodge tools.  I multiplied the background layer to darken the image and added the subject layer with a series of paint spatter and graffiti treatments. I then added the logo as a screen layer and retouched it with a soft brush/overlay mask to bring out the text while making it appear as if it were actual graffiti on the wall. Most of the retouching was trial and error working from multiple layers while testing various brushes and screens to create the desired base image. I added the informational text, duplicated the layer, inverted it with a gaussian blur and laid it behind the original layer to make the simple black text stand out against the dark background.  After adjusting the levels I had my base image to work from.

Highlighted features:  The image looked somewhat flat so to add more dimension, I added a few simple color highlights to the lips and left eye to create the finalized banner ad below:
